EPSO/AST/158/26 · Assistants AST 3 · Updated 21 October 2026
Working with data, information resources or archives? The EPSO AST3 Data Management competition offers three specialist routes towards a permanent EU career. This guide brings together the main eligibility conditions, application steps and preparation options so you can plan your next move.
The original application and identity-document deadline is 11 November 2026 at 12:00 midday, Brussels time. However, EPSO has announced that the application deadline will be extended following its clarification of the education requirements. The new date has not yet been announced. EPSO says an amendment is due in the Official Journal on 9 November 2026. Check that amendment and your Candidate Portal before relying on a final deadline.
The currently published deadline for supporting documents is 11 March 2027 at 12:00 midday, Brussels time. Check whether the forthcoming amendment changes any related arrangements.

Field 1 — Data processing, analytics and statistics: 423 successful candidates sought. Work can involve preparing datasets, checking quality, managing metadata, producing statistics and dashboards, and supporting analysis or automated processing.
Field 2 — Librarianship and information science: 243 successful candidates sought. Tasks can include cataloguing resources, managing collections, assisting research and information searches, and maintaining library systems.
Field 3 — Records and archives management: 298 successful candidates sought. Work can cover document lifecycles, classification, metadata, digital preservation and guidance on records management.
There are 964 places across the three reserve lists. You may apply for one field only. Choose according to your documented qualifications and experience, rather than the number of places alone.
You must be a national of an EU Member State and enjoy full citizenship rights. The Notice also sets the general conditions concerning military-service obligations and suitability for the duties.
You need two different official EU languages: Language 1 at least C1 and Language 2 at least B2. Reasoning is tested in Language 1; the specialist test and written exercise use Language 2. Your preparation language should match the language you will use for each test.
The main routes are relevant post-secondary studies lasting at least two years, followed by at least three years of relevant professional experience, or secondary education giving access to post-secondary studies, followed by at least six years of relevant experience.
The newer clarification also matters: a bachelor’s degree in any subject followed by a relevant qualification requiring a prior bachelor’s degree for admission can satisfy the education condition, regardless of that later qualification’s duration. At least three years of relevant experience must follow that qualification.
The accepted study areas and experience criteria differ by field. Read sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2 or 3.3.3 and Annex II of the Notice alongside the latest clarification. A qualification title or years of employment alone do not establish eligibility: your evidence must show the required relevance and chronology.
The selection includes verbal, numerical and abstract reasoning, a field-related multiple-choice test and a free-text essay on EU matters (EUFTE). The field-related test contains 30 questions in 40 minutes, with a minimum score of 15/30.
Reasoning checks your ability to work accurately with text, numbers and patterns. The specialist test focuses on your chosen field. The written exercise assesses how effectively you organise and communicate information. Review the Notice for the full timing, pass marks and ranking rules before planning practice sessions.
EPSO will communicate confirmed testing dates and instructions through the competition page and Candidate Portal. The application deadline is not an examination date.

Start with a timed reasoning baseline. Identify recurring errors and work on the method before increasing speed. For your specialist field, use the official duties and requirements to organise revision. Include regular writing sessions: practise planning, selecting relevant information and producing a clear answer within a time limit.
Alternate focused study with mock exams, then review why each error happened. A useful weekly plan includes reasoning, specialist revision and writing rather than postponing one part until the end.
